Hello true believers! I’m Cory Allen and I’m just going to gush about my favorite comic company, Marvel. Now, I’m going to focus on their movies from the 1940s to now! That’s theatrical and made for tv!
Captain America (Serial)- Produced by Republic Pictures in 1944. It’s not really anything like the comics, the serial follows Grant Gardner as Captain America…not Steve Rogers. It’s okay for a serial, this was around a time that no one gave a shit about the comics, so it’s get a free ride.
Howard the Duck- The first official Marvel film about Howard, a duck from another dimension brought to Earth. It’s produced by George Lucas. It’s one of those film that is considered one of the worst comic adaptations out there. It’s really not. It’s a fun movie with a lot of heart and a great soundtrack!
The Punisher (1989)– Dolph Lundgren steps into the role of Frank Castle aka The Punisher. It’s a violent film and fits perfectly with the way movies were back then. Louis Gossett Jr is also on this, so it’s a true classic.
Captain America (1990)- Matt Salinger plays Steve Rogers who undergoes an experiment to turn him into a super human. It can be really silly at parts, but I can dig it. Salinger did well as Rogers even if the costume was laughable.
Blade- A vampire hunter named Blade kills the bloodsucking bastards. Wesley Snipes plays the character to perfection. Only things that hurt this is the terrible CGI..that seemed to be used in Freddy vs. Jason years later.
X-Men- Those uncanny mutants of Charles Xavier takes on Magneto who is attempting to turn humans into one of them. It’s okay, but again, why did superheros have to always wear leather. Hugh Jackman was amazing and so was, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan.
Blade II- The first sequel for Marvel! It’s easily the best of the Blade franchise as directed by Guillermo Del Toro.
Spider-Man- Tobey Maguire puts his spin on Marvel’s most famous character, Spider Man. He faces the dastardly Green Goblin played by the lovely Willem Dafoe. My favorite Spider Man film of all time!
Daredevil- 2003 brought us the man without fear played by Ben Affleck. I don’t understand the hate of this one while it’s not as good as it should be. Michael Clarke Duncan played a pretty good Kingpin.
X2: X-Men United- A man who hates mutants tries to wipe them off the face of the planet, so the good mutants and bad mutants work together. My favorite X-Men film.
Hulk (2003)- Eric Bana plays the Incredible Hulk and Nick Nolte does his best as the absorbing man. It has a lot of problems, but I think the Hulk actually looks decent on this and the whole comic book angles is neat to see.
The Punisher (2004)- This time around it’s Thomas Jane’s turn as Frank Castle. It’s incredibly violent. It’s got some pretty good scenes. I’m on the fence between this or the Lundgren film being the better Punisher film..
Spider-Man 2- Peter Parker faces more challenges and its one hell of a ride. He fights one of the best casted villains ever, Dr. Ock. People believe this to be the greatest Spidey film and I can say it’s definitely up there.
Blade: Trinity- Wesley Snipes returns as the vampire hunter for the final time as he confronts another super powerful vampire. He gets the help of a few other hunters. It’s an okay attempt, but has a lot of silly things like Triple H.
Elektra- Jennifer Garner reprises her role as Elektra from Daredevil. I’ll have to admit, I watched this once in 8th grade. I just watched it for Garner and I can’t really remember if I liked it or not…so it’s pointless for me to bring it up, ay?
Fantastic Four (2005)- Marvel’s first family is brought for their first official movie. The movie is perfectly casted for Mr. Fantasic and The Thing and even Dr. Doom. It’s a fun movie.
X-Men: The Last Stand- What was suppose to be the conclusion to the X-Men series has a cure and all out war between good and bad mutants. Also, The Phoenix is represented in this. I really enjoy it. I do see that they tried to cram a lot into this, but what can you do?
Ghost Rider- Nicholas Cage is Johnny Blaze, a daredevil who sold his soul to the devil. Ghost Rider looks good, but Nic Cage is just awkward in the role. It doesn’t fit him..
Spider-Man 3- Spider-man goes through a lot on this one. There’s a love triangle, Venom pops in, Sandman is there, Uncle Ben’s real killer is revealed. It’s a mess, I admit. But, I still enjoy it. Maguire gave up Spidey after this and I miss him 😦
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer- A being from Space comes to Earth to feed his master, Galactus. It’s up to the Fantastic Four to stop him. This one is another fun film.
Iron Man- The beginning of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) sees Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark who is captured by terrorists. He creates a suit of armor and escapes to become a superhero. A great flick! The source material was represented very well with this and magnificent casting!
The Incredible Hulk- Edward Norton plays The big green guy in this film as he eludes the government. He faces Abomination. I say, in a way it is definitely better than the 2003 Hulk. I just don’t care about the way he looks on this one.
The Punisher: War Zone- Another actor named Ray Stevenson is brought in as Frank Castle/The Punisher. It’s more violent and he does some pretty cool things. BUT, the villain is annoying and so is his brother. This is hands down the worst Punisher film. Stevenson looks good though.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine- We get a look into the origins of the popular mutant, Wolverine. We see why he chose to have his skeleton covered with adamantium and whatnot. It’s another movie that tried to introduce too many things. We had Gambit, Blob, Deadpool and tons of others. It’s probably the worst of the series, this or the first X-Men, to be honest.
Iron Man 2- Tony Stark faces challenges living in his suit. He also faces Whiplash. It’s not bad, it was just wasted potential. It’s the worst of the MCU.
Thor- Chris Hemsworth plays the God of thunder, Thor. As he is banished to Earth by his father. His step bro, Loki takes control and tries to destroy him. It’s a huge leap forward and kinda beautiful. Hemsworth is gold as Thor and Hiddleston as Loki is also grand.
X-Men: First Class- An origin story for the first class of Professor X’s X-Men. It’s a neat story and I think it’s a step up from X-Men origins: Wolverine. It has a really strong cast.
Captain America: The First Avenger- Chris Evans trades in his role as the Human Torch for Steve Rogers as he undergoes an experiment to become a superhero. He faces off against The Red Skull. It’s a nice WWII pic.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance- Nic Cage’s second go as Ghost Rider, I watched it once and it was pretty bad.
The Avengers- Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor team up against aliens hell bent on ruling the Earth. Hand down, the greatest superhero movie of all time. I’ve watched it so many times.
The Amazing Spider-Man- Andrew Garfield comes in this reboot of Spider-Man. He fights against the Lizard who aims to turn everyone in New York into lizards. It’s a good one!
Iron Man 3- Tony Stark faces the Mandarin, he also has panic attacks. It’s maligned by fans, but I really enjoyed it.
The Wolverine- Wolverine heads to Japan to visit a man who’s life he saved in WWII. Wolverine loses his healing factor and hilarity ensues. It’s probably one of the best X-Men movies. Jackman was pretty amazing on here!
Thor: The Dark World- Thor tries to stop an alien race from ending the entire universe. It’s pretty good and has plenty of funny moments. I like it a little more than the first Thor movie.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier- Captain America finds out a secret that will bring everything crumbling down. My second favorite MCU film. It’s truly magnificent.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2- Peter Parker tries to keep a promise he made to Gwen Stacy’s dying father. He also has to face Electro and the new Green Goblin. It’s got problems but it is still pretty entertaining. It’s a shame we won’t be getting to see where the story goes.
X-Men: Days of Future Past- Wolverine is sent back to the 70s to stop a mutant from causing their extinction. It’s a very bleak movie, but enjoyable. It creates more confusion than anything.
Guardians of the Galaxy- Misfits band together to save the galaxy. It’s a great movie, yet people tend to blow it out of proportion. It is really fun though.
Avengers: Age of Ultron- The Avengers return to face off against a robot who wants to kill humans. While not as good as the first Avengers film, it has what I believe is the best fight scene of any of the Marvel films between Hulk and the Hulkbuster.
Ant-Man- Paul Rudd is hired to wear a shrinking suit to stop a insane man from creating weaponized shrinking suits to provide to evil organizations. Another fun film from Marvel.
Fantastic Four (2015)- Four people are given superpowers and decide to stop an evil tyrant from destroying Earth. It isn’t bad, but not great.
Deadpool- The Merc with a Mouth is out for revenge. It’s a fun movie with so many funny moments. I definitely recommend it to fans of the character and Marvel in general.
